This model is interactive and can be used online, but is currently unstable on smart devices, a Windows PC running the latest update of Chrome or Edge is recommended. Close model settings before operating the model.
This Stella model hosted by the Open-AMOC project recreates a 2-box model designed by Stommel (1961). The equations provide an estimate for the rate of change for factors of AMOC between the North Atlantic and the Tropics. The preset values you can investigate above produce the weak "collapsed" state of AMOC.
STELLA is ideal for testing basic model structures and for beginning to code with a symbolic and accessible object-oriented language. Stella Online, a browser based model building tool, is a simple way to begin modelling with STELLA for free, but is very limited in ability and closed-source. It is instead reccommended you learn Python or R for modelling.
For more information on this STELLA model, please read the instruction PDF and explore Stommel's paper.
